Some things just go together: salt and pepper, bread and butter, bacon-lettuce-tomato… and Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre. These three varietals (in various proportions) form the backbone of notable blends throughout France’s Rhone Valley, and they are equally companionable here in Dry Creek Valley. In our second “GSM”, the Grenache (40%) provides a seductive strawberry fruit that wraps around a brooding, dark-noted core of Syrah (24%). The Mourvèdre (36%) seasons the blend with a woodsy spice. The result is a lovely synergy, a wine that is appealing right now, but that promises to amply reward a little bottle-age. Enjoy it with a lightly smoked pork tenderloin and cauliflower roasted with lemon and garlic.
