This 2012 is Amphora's fifth vintage of Barbera from Heringer Vineyard, in Clarksburg. This perennial Amphora favorite is somewhat uncommon in California, but it was fairly widely planted in the “early days” due to its bright acidity in warm growing conditions such as Clarksburg. The wine is consistently characterized by savory and dark fruit notes both in aroma and flavor. This Barbera shows a clean earthiness, which seems to be a characteristic of this vineyard across several varietals. The meaty, leathery aspects are quite Italianate, though the mouthfeel is Californian with nice brightness and moderate tannins. It’s very approachable and inviting, with a long, lush finish. Serve this wine with creamy risotto with smoky prosciutto or tomato-y chicken cacciatore.
